Screen Printing FAQ

Process & Limitations

What types of fabrics and garments are best for screen printing?

Screen printing works best on cotton and cotton-blend fabrics with smooth, flat surfaces. Heavier cotton tees, fleece, and hoodies take ink well. Performance or stretchy synthetics can also be printed, but may require special inks or additives.

What’s the maximum number of colors you can print in one design?

Most jobs use 1–6 colors, but we can print up to 8–10 colors depending on the artwork and press setup. For full-color designs or photo prints, we may recommend simulated process or digital transfers instead.

Do you offer specialty inks (metallic, puff, glow, discharge, etc.)?

Yes! We offer a range of specialty options including metallic, shimmer, puff, glow-in-the-dark, reflective, high-density, and discharge inks. Some require specific garment types or color bases, so we’ll guide you on what works best.

What’s the difference between plastisol and water-based inks?

Plastisol inks sit on top of the fabric, offering bold, durable color with a slightly raised feel — great for most apparel. Water-based inks soak into the fabric for a softer, vintage feel but work best on 100% cotton and lighter colors.

Can you print over seams, zippers, or pockets?

It’s possible, but not ideal. Uneven surfaces like seams and zippers can cause ink gaps or misprints. We’ll review your garment style and artwork to recommend the cleanest print location.

Artwork & Setup

What file formats do you need for screen printing?

We prefer vector files such as AI, EPS, or PDF with fonts outlined. High-resolution (300 DPI) PNG or TIFF files with transparent backgrounds also work for raster artwork.

Why is there a screen setup fee?

Each color in your design requires its own screen to be burned, registered, and aligned. The setup fee covers that labor, materials, and calibration time — it’s a one-time charge per design and per color.

Can I reuse screens from a past order?

Absolutely! As long as the design and size remain the same, we can reuse your setup to save time and cost. We store your art and screen details for easy reorders.

How do you handle color matching for Pantone or brand colors?

We mix custom ink colors in-house using the Pantone Matching System (PMS). You can provide a Pantone number or sample, and we’ll match it as closely as possible. Specialty inks or certain fabrics may affect final shade slightly.

Do you offer design help if I don’t have print-ready art?

Yes! Our art department can clean up files, vectorize logos, or create layouts from scratch. Basic adjustments are often free; full design services are quoted based on complexity.

Turnaround & Quantities

What’s your standard turnaround time?

Standard turnaround is typically 7–10 business days after artwork approval and payment. Rush services may be available depending on production capacity and garment availability.

Is there a minimum order quantity for screen printing?

Yes. Screen printing orders require a minimum of 24 pieces per design. This helps cover setup time and keep pricing efficient. For smaller runs, digital printing or heat transfers may be a better fit.

Do you charge extra for multiple print locations (front, back, sleeve)?

Yes, each additional print location adds setup time and ink cost. Pricing depends on the size and complexity of each print.

What if I need different sizes or garment styles in one order?

No problem! As long as the same design is used, you can mix sizes or styles (like t-shirts and hoodies). Certain fabric differences may slightly affect print feel or placement.

Can you do a sample print before full production?

Yes, we can produce a printed sample for approval before running the full job. Sampling adds a small fee and extends turnaround time but ensures exact results.

Care & Longevity

How durable are screen prints?

Very durable — a properly cured screen print can last the life of the garment. It resists cracking and fading with normal wear and wash.

How should I wash printed garments to make them last longer?

Wash inside-out in cold water with mild detergent. Avoid bleach and high heat drying. Hang-drying or tumble-drying on low helps preserve print quality.

Can you print on performance or moisture-wicking fabrics?

Yes, but they require special inks or low-cure additives to prevent dye migration or cracking. We’ll recommend the best method for each garment type.
